Sources at Number 10 have confirmed that the UK officials are currently in Doha (Qatar) having protracted negotiations with senior Taliban figures to further secure safe passage out of Afghanistan for a number of British nationals and Afghans who remain there. The British government briefed the media that it had sent Prime Minister Boris Johnson's special representative for Afghan transition, Simon Gass, to Doha, Qatar, to meet with the Taliban representatives. It comes after a Taliban pledge to allow further departures.

It is thought that there are between 150-250 individuals and their respective families are eligible for relocation to the UK

Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab will face questions from MPs later today (Wednesday, 1 September 2021) over his handling of the UK's withdrawal from Afghanistan. He is expected to receive cross-party calls for his resignation after it emerged that he had been "unavailable" to make a phone call about evacuating interpreters while he was on holiday in Crete.

Britain is in direct talks with the Taliban seeking to secure "safe passage" of its remaining nationals and allies out of Afghanistan after the group's takeover of the country. Click Here for our Full Analysis direct to your mailbox or smart device.
