On 25 February, Nigeria will hold presidential and federal parliamentary elections as President Muhammadu Buhari steps down after eight years in power. Gubernatorial and state legislative elections will follow on 11 March.
Buhari’s tenure has seen worsening insecurity, unemployment, living standards and debt, while Nigeria’s position as a major global oil producer has declined. These are all challenges the incoming government will have to address immediately.
For the first time since the return to civilian rule in 1999, there are three credible presidential contenders, rather than two. In addition to Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar of the two major parties, Peter Obi has emerged as a surprise contender, capitalising on Nigeria’s shifting demographics to mobilise the youth vote.
In this webinar, the Torchlight AI Africa team will look ahead to the polls, forecasting who is most likely to win and what impact they will make. They will also discuss the numerous security threats facing Nigeria, which have prompted the country’s electoral commission to raise the possibility of cancelling or delaying the polls. Register Here
